Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) in the Kansas-Lower Republican River Basin

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has prepared Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for the Little Blue River from Hollenberg to Waterville, Black Vermillion River, and Big Blue River from Oketo to Blue Rapids watersheds in the Kansas-Lower Republican River Basin. These watersheds are all impaired for total phosphorus. Additionally, the Little Blue River and Big Blue River are impaired for pH. Due to these impairments, these waters do not meet state surface water quality standards.

The total phosphorus TMDLs presented for public review are:

Upper Little Blue and Lower Little Blue (HUC 10270206 and 10270207)

  • Little Blue River from Hollenberg to Waterville
  • Rose Creek near Narka
  • Little Blue River near Hollenberg
  • Mill Creek near Hanover
  • Little Blue River near Waterville

Black Vermillion River (HUC 10270205)

  • Black Vermillion River
  • Black Vermillion River near Frankfort
  • Robidoux Creek near Frankfort

Lower Big Blue (HUC 10270205 and 10270207)

  • Big Blue River from Oketo to Blue Rapids
  • Big Blue River near Oketo
  • Big Blue River near Blue Rapids
  • Horseshoe Creek near Marysville
  • North Elm Creek near Oketo

Draft copies of these TMDLs can be obtained for review as of January 17, 2020 by contacting the Watershed Planning, Monitoring, and Assessment Section in the Bureau of Water (785-296-8791) or by accessing them online through the KDHE TMDL website at http://www.kdheks.gov/tmdl/planning_mgmt.htm.

A public hearing to take testimony from interested parties will be held:

The first portion of the hearing will be a briefing by the Watershed Planning, Monitoring, and Assessment Section outlining each of the TMDLs, and the second portion of the hearing will be open for public comment.  

The public comment period for these TMDLs will be held open from January 17, 2020 through February 14, 2020.

After reviewing the testimony and public comments, KDHE will make appropriate revisions to the TMDLs and submit them to Region 7 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
