A public hearing will be conducted at the time and place set out above to consider the potential opening of a public defender office in the 11th Judicial District (Crawford, Labette, and Cherokee Counties), Kansas. During this public hearing, some members of the Board of Indigents’ Defense Services will be present to hear public comment regarding the potential establishment of a public defender office office in the 11 Judicial District. However, the Board will not debate the issue or decide the issue during this hearing. Instead, this is an opportunity for interested community members to give their input on the issue. A Board discussion and vote on the topic of a potential public defender office in the 11 Judicial District will come at a later date during one of our Board’s subsequent Board meetings. Those meeting dates and locations can be found at www.sbids.org.
The public comment period is now open for the purpose of receiving both written and oral public comments on a potential public defender office.
Written comments will be accepted by email and may be submitted to Administrative Staff Attorney Brandon Barrett at [email protected]. Please include your name, address, and contact information on any written comments that you submit. Written comments are due by 5:00 p.m. on August 19, 2022, without exception.
Oral comments may be made in person at the public hearing on August 20, 2022. All interested parties will be given a reasonable opportunity to present their views orally on the potential public defender office during the hearing. However, because of the anticipated interest in this topic, oral public commenters will be limited to approximately 3 minutes per speaker at the event in order to accommodate as many speakers as time allows. Speakers wishing to sign up ahead of the public comment session may do so by emailing Director Heather Cessna at [email protected] prior to 5:00 p.m., Friday, August 20, 2022. A speaker sign-up sheet will also be available at the event.
Any individual with a disability may request accommodation in order to participate in the public hearing. Please be aware that seating is limited and will be first come, first served.
There is currently no masking or social distancing requirement for Bicknell Center at Pittsburg State. If the situation changes and the State or County public health department require masks or social distancing prior to the public hearing a notice will be posted on the Board of Indigents' Defense Services website at www.sbids.org.
While we do not anticipate any last minute changes to the event schedule if there are any last minute cancellations a notice of that cancellation will be posted at least an hour ahead of the hearing on the Board of Indigents’ Defense Services website at www.sbids.org. If cancellation of the public hearing is necessary, a new public hearing will be held at a later date.
